Whistles for Life Preserver (For submarine use)

There are three whistles used on USN shipboard life preservers.  Ships should transition to the flat type whistle (NSN 4220-01-487-2931) on all their life preservers for ships ordering replacement whistles and new construction ships.

  1. Whistle (NSN 4220-01-487-2931) - The flat type whistle is the preferred whistle for the Inherently Buoyant, MK-1, and the Abandon Ship life preservers. It is provided through supply and is listed on shipboard life preserver AELs.

  1. Whistle, dual tone (NSN 8465-01-278-6982) – The flat type whistle was used in the Inherently Buoyant, MK-1, and the Abandon Ship life preservers.  Ships should replace with the flat type whistle (NSN 4220-01-487-2931).

  1. Whistle, Ball  (NSN 8465-00-254-8803)- The ball  type whistle was  used on Inherently Buoyant Life Preservers and Abandon Ship life preservers only.  Ships should replace with the flat type whistle (NSN 4220-01-487-2931).
