DAMAGE CONTROLMAN (DC) RATING KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

The functional areas within the Damage Controlman rate are:

DAMAGE CONTROL, FIREFIGHTING, CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND RADIOLOGICAL DEFENSE (CBR-D);

  • EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEM TRAINING, OPERATION, QUALIFICATION, MAINTENANCE, REPAIR AND IMPROVED REPLACEMENT.

  • TECHNICAL ADMINISTRATION, LOGISTICS, AND SUPPLY SUPPORT

  • HOUSEKEEPING OF RESPONSIBLE SHIPBOARD SPACES

  • SHIPBOARD BATTLE DAMAGE TRAINING AND CASUALTY RESPONSE,

  • PERSONNEL COORDINATION AND COMMUNICATION UNDER STRESS

  • ENVIRONMENTAL AND HAZMAT HANDLING

These functional areas provide a foundation to the basic general tasks and knowledge requirements for the Damage Controlman pay grades to effectively prepare for and handle the shipboard environment.  It is hoped that the elements within each area will better prepare personnel to understand the DC trade skills, improve the DC work ethic, and effectively pass the knowledge down to junior personnel.

Additionally today with technology moving so fast, there are additional differences and unique features to learn and understand for each ship class, flight and even differences between hulls of the same class. This presents additional challenges and commitment for today’s Damage Controlman to know and understand their ship. What knowledge was understood on an initial tour of duty for a ship will be in constant change through repair, modernization and new construction for follow on hulls and flights.

Each rate has a guide list of knowledge points to seek, understand ad build upon for advancement to the next career level.
